Professional Builder Award:

Again this year we have entered the HIA Professional Builder Awards. These awards are based on each company’s financial management, business management, customer service, marketing, training, innovation, technical excellence, Occupational Health and Safety and systems management.

In past years we have been successful in winning the NSW Award in our category (Small/Medium Builder of the Year) each year since its inception in 2003. We were also very proud to win the Australian Small/Medium Builder of the Year in 2004.

The current competition sees the NSW award winners announced in November 2006 and the Australian winners announced in May 2007.

Basix’s Requirements:

“Basix” is the Building Sustainability Index. It is a NSW government requirement that affects all new houses, villas, townhouses or units within NSW. It assesses each new design against specific water and energy reduction targets. It also assesses the thermal comfort of each dwelling to meet requirements. A Basix Certificate must be obtained before any plans can be lodged with our local council for approval

As at July 1st 2006, it has seen the improvement percentages required increase from a 25% saving to a 35% saving on energy and thermal comfort. Water saving still remains at 30% for this area.

Information used in the assessment for a Basix Certificate include site information, house size, building materials, fittings for hot water, and cooling and heating loads.

The implications of this may mean the issues such as the following may need to be considered:-

Gas, solar hot water or heat pump system

low energy lighting

water efficient shower heads and tap fixtures

use of eaves, shading, and insulation

performance glass or double glazing

rainwater tanks and pumps

water saving toilet systems

grey water systems

solar orientation

cross ventilation

ceiling fans, evaporative coolers or high efficiency air conditioning
